Mental health impact of multiple sexually minoritized and gender expansive stressors among LGBTQ+ young adults: a latent class analysis

Aims
In the United States, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual and other sexually minoritized and gender expansive (LGBTQ+) young adults are at increased risk for experiencing mental health inequities, including anxiety, depression and psychological distress-related challenges associated with their sexual and gender identities. LGBTQ+ young adults may have unique experiences of sexual and gender minority-related vulnerability because of LGBTQ+-related minority stress and stressors, such as heterosexism, family rejection, identity concealment and internalized homophobia. Identifying and understanding specific LGBTQ+-related minority stress experiences and their complex roles in contributing to mental health burden among LGBTQ+ young adults could inform public health efforts to eliminate mental health inequities experienced by LGBTQ+ young adults. Therefore, this study sought to form empirically based risk profiles (i.e., latent classes) of LGBTQ+ young adults based on their experiences with familial heterosexist experiences, LGBTQ+-related family rejection, internalized LGBTQ+-phobia and LGBTQ+ identity concealment, and then identify associations of derived classes with psychological distress.
MethodsWe recruited and enrolled participants using nonprobability, cross-sectional online survey data collected between May and August 2020 (N = 482). We used a three-step latent class analysis (LCA) approach to identify unique classes of response patterns to LGBTQ+-related minority stressor subscale items (i.e., familial heterosexist experiences, LGBTQ+-related family rejection, internalized LGBTQ+-phobia and LGBTQ+ identity concealment), and multinomial logistic regression to characterize the associations between the derived classes and psychological distress.
ResultsFive distinct latent classes emerged from the LCA: (1) low minority stress, (2) LGBTQ+ identity concealment, (3) family rejection, (4) moderate minority stress and (5) high minority stress. Participants who were classified in the high and moderate minority stress classes were more likely to suffer from moderate and severe psychological distress compared to those classified in the low minority stress class. Additionally, relative to those in the low minority stress class, participants who were classified in the LGBTQ+ identity concealment group were more likely to suffer from severe psychological distress.
ConclusionFamilial heterosexist experiences, LGBTQ+-related family rejection, internalized LGBTQ+-phobia and LGBTQ+ identity concealment are four constructs that have been extensively examined as predictors for mental health outcomes among LGBTQ+ persons, and our study is among the first to reveal nuanced gradients of these stressors. Additionally, we found that more severe endorsement of minority stress was associated with greater psychological distress. Given our study results and the previously established negative mental health impacts of minority stressors among LGBTQ+ young adults, findings from our study can inform research, practice, and policy reform and development that could prevent and reduce mental health inequities among LGBTQ+ young adults.

Objective
The aim of our study was to evaluate the relationships between alexithymia and suicidal ideation in a sample of adult outpatients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).
MethodsA sample of 90 adult outpatients with DSM-IV diagnosis of OCD were tested with tested with the Yale-Brown Obsessive Compulsive Scale, Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), Scale for Suicide Ideation (SSI) and Montgomery-Asberg Depression Rating Scale (MADRS).
Results35 subjects were categorized as alexithymics and showed earlier onset, longer duration of illness and more likelihood to have a chronic course than nonalexithymics; they also scored higher on the MADRS and SSI. Results of a linear regression showed that chronic OCD course together with Difficulty in Identifying Feelings dimension of TAS-20 and higher MADRS scores were significantly associated with higher scores on the SSI.
ConclusionsSuicidal ideation is frequent among adult outpatients with OCD and is strongly related to the presence of alexithymia and depressive symptoms. Implications are discussed.

Objective
To evaluate relationships between alexithymia, somatic complaints and depressive symptoms in a non-clinical sample of school-aged Italian adolescents.
MethodsA mixed male-female sample of 168 school-aged adolescents with a mean age of 15.8 years was investigated with self-reported rating scales. Scales were: Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20), Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), Symptom Checklist 90 - Somatization Subscale (SCL-90-SOM), State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), Rosemberg Self Esteem Scale (RSES). Subjects were evaluated at three times: at the beginning (T0), at the middle (T1) and at the end (T2) of the scholastic year.
Results30 subjects (17.9%) were categorized as alexithymics and, overall, showed greater psychological distress than non-alexithymics. Alexithymia levels remained stable during the time as well as the number of alexithymics. Alexithymics were more suitable to develop more severe depressive symptoms. Results of a linear regression supported the notion that depressive symptoms at endpoint were significantly associated with female sex, DIF subscale of TAS-20 and higher SCL-90-SOM scores.
ConclusionsAlexithymia, depressive symptoms and somatic complaints appeared to be highly correlated in adolescence.

Background Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is among the most common psychiatric disorders of childhood that often persists into adulthood and old age. Yet ADHD is currently underdiagnosed and undertreated in many European countries, leading to chronicity of symptoms and impairment, due to lack of, or ineffective treatment, and higher costs of illness.
Methods The European Network Adult ADHD and the Section for Neurodevelopmental Disorders Across the Lifespan (NDAL) of the European Psychiatric Association (EPA), aim to increase awareness and knowledge of adult ADHD in and outside Europe. This Updated European Consensus Statement aims to support clinicians with research evidence and clinical experience from 63 experts of European and other countries in which ADHD in adults is recognized and treated.
Results Besides reviewing the latest research on prevalence, persistence, genetics and neurobiology of ADHD, three major questions are addressed: (1) What is the clinical picture of ADHD in adults? (2) How should ADHD be properly diagnosed in adults? (3) How should adult ADHDbe effectively treated?
Conclusions ADHD often presents as a lifelong impairing condition. The stigma surrounding ADHD, mainly due to lack of knowledge, increases the suffering of patients. Education on the lifespan perspective, diagnostic assessment, and treatment of ADHD must increase for students of general and mental health, and for psychiatry professionals. Instruments for screening and diagnosis of ADHD in adults are available, as are effective evidence-based treatments for ADHD and its negative outcomes. More research is needed on gender differences, and in older adults with ADHD.

QTL analysis of resistance to Mal de Río Cuarto disease in maize using recombinant inbred lines

Mal de Río Cuarto (MRC) is a devastating disease that reduces yield, quality and economic value of maize in Argentina. The objective of the present study was to map quantitative trait loci (QTL) for reactions to MRC from recombinant inbred lines (RILs). Reactions to the endemic MRC disease were evaluated in 145 advanced F2:6 lines, derived from a cross between a resistant (BLS14) and a susceptible (Mo17) line, at four environments in the temperate semi-arid crop region of Argentina. The evaluations of disease score (SCO), disease incidence (INC) and disease severity (SEV) were carried out on each individual RIL. Low heritability estimates were found across environments for SCO (0·23), INC (0·27) and SEV (0·22). A genetic map of simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers covering a total genetic distance of 1019 cM was built. QTL for resistance to MRC disease were found on different maize chromosomes. Four significant QTL, each explaining between 0·08 and 0·14 of the total phenotypic variation, were located on chromosomes 1, 4 and 10. Two QTL specific to the INC, and one specific to SEV, may be involved in different mechanisms of resistance to MRC. Although MRC reaction is highly affected by environmental effects, the QTL×environment interaction for INC and SEV was low. Most of the QTL for reaction to MRC detected in the present study were mapped to regions of the maize genome containing genes conferring resistance to various pathogens. The significant QTL across environments are good candidates to select for MRC resistance.
Prevalence and characteristics of antidepressant drug prescriptions in older Italian patients

Background: During last few decades, the proportion of elderly persons prescribed with antidepressants for the treatment of depression and anxiety has increased. The aim of this study was to evaluate prevalence of antidepressant prescription and related factors in elderly in-patients, as well as the consistency between prescription of antidepressants and specific diagnoses requiring these medications.
Methods: Thirty-four internal medicine and four geriatric wards in Italy participated in the Registro Politerapie SIMI–REPOSI study during 2008. In all, 1,155 in-patients, 65 years or older, were enrolled. Prevalence of the use of antidepressants was calculated at both admission and discharge. Logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between patients’ characteristics (age, gender, Charlson Index, number of drugs, specific diseases, other psychotropic medications) and the prescription of antidepressants.
Results: The number of patients treated with antidepressant medication at hospital admission was 115 (9.9%) and at discharge 119 (10.3%). In a multivariate analysis, a higher number of drugs (OR = 1.2; 95% CI = 1.1–1.3), use of anxiolytic drugs (OR = 2.1; 95% CI = 1.2–3.6 and OR = 3.8; 95% CI = 2.1–6.8), and a diagnosis of dementia (OR = 6.1; 95% CI = 3.1–11.8 and OR = 5.8; 95% CI = 3.3–10.3, respectively, at admission and discharge) were independently associated with antidepressant prescription. A specific diagnosis requiring the use of antidepressants was present only in 66 (57.4%) patients at admission and 76 (66.1%) at discharge.
Conclusions: Antidepressants are commonly prescribed in geriatric patients, especially in those receiving multiple drugs, other psychotropic drugs, and those affected by dementia. There is an inconsistency between the prescription of antidepressants and a specific diagnosis that the hospitalization only slightly improves.

Linear and non-linear optical properties of conjugated polymers are often masked by the inter-chain network in solid state. The formation of aggregates may trap excitons, reduce oscillator strength and modify relaxation processes. The control of the inter-chain interaction is the main reason for developing “threaded” polymers, where supra-molecular encapsulation should reduce aggregation. Here, we investigate the influence of the encapsulation with β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) macrocycles on the photophysics of the polyfluorene-alt-biphenylene (PFBP) using femtosecond non-linear spectroscopy. Upon threading we observe enhancement of the stimulated emission (SE) in the visible range and reduction of the charge absorption. These phenomena are ascribed to the reduced inter-chain interaction. In more isolated chains the dynamics of intra and inter-chain charge states are distinguished. In addition, we performed three-beam experiments in which a first pulse (pump) creates singlet excited states; a second (push) pulse re-excite the singlet state and a broadband probe pulse detects the induced changes in transmission. This technique shows: (i) charges are generated from higher lying singlet states also in isolated chains (ii) ultrafast optical gain switching is possible in threaded chain. Finally, we demonstrate that ASE occurs in films of threaded polymers and lasing can be achieved with much lower threshold than the neat polymer chain in the DFB configuration. All our findings point out the potential role of rotaxanes in photonics, as amplifiers and reopen the route to the electrically pumped organic lasers and all-optical logic devices.
Fructan metabolism in two species of Bromus subjected to chilling and water stress

Two species of Bromus adapted to different climatic conditions were studied to determine their responses to chilling and water stress. Enzymes of sucrose and fructan metabolism as well as fructoside content were measured in roots and shoots. The results indicate that Bromus pictus (adapted to a cold desert area) has a constitutive fructan synthesis, whilst B. auleticus (adapted to a warmer northern climate) only accumulated fructan under cold stress. Microscopic observations of roots exposed to fluorescent probes ascertained cell viability and showed that the apex of roots in the northern species were more affected by the water-deficit treatment than the southern species. The presence of fructans in B. pictus and their absence in B. auleticus support the hypothesis that fructans play a role in plant tolerance to environmental stress.
Large Bent Jets in the Inner Region of CSS

Recently we focussed our attention on a sample of Compact Steep-spectrum Sources (CSSs) selected because of the large bent radio jets seen in the inner region of emission. The largest distortions are often seen in sources dominated by jets, and there are suggestions that this might to some extent be due to projection effects. However, superluminal motion is rare in CSSs. The only case we know of so far is 3C147 (Alef at al. 1990) with a mildly superluminal speed of ≃ 1.3v/c. Moreover, the core fractional luminosity in CSSs is ≃ 3% and ≤ 0.4% for quasars and radio galaxies respectively. Similar values are found for large size radio sources i.e. both boosting and orientations in the sky are similar for the two classes of objects. An alternative possibility is that these bent-jet sources might also be brightened by interactions with the ambient media. There are clear indications that intrinsic distortions due to interactions with a dense inhomogeneous gaseous environment play an important role. Observational support comes from the large RMs found in CSSs (Taylor et al. 1992; Mantovani et al. 1994; Junor et al. these proc.) and often associated with strong depolarization (Garrington & Akujor, t.p.). The CSSs also have very luminous Narrow Line Regions emission, with exceptional velocity structure (Gelderman, t.p.).
